Vista cant access internet
The error I get when I open a web page is Internet Explorer cannot display the web page. I am not sure the steps to check and remove firewalls. That might be my issue. I verified that 'work offline' isn't set. Any other ideas. It displays server, address, non-authoritative answer: name and addresses, so that looks like it worked. Closed alll browsers and started again - still getting Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Other ideas? On IE8's "cannot display the webpage" message, have you tried clicking "Diagnose Connection Problems"?
That'll start Vista's built-in Network Diagnostics. Vista's net diagnostics have fixed my connection issues on many an occasion. Besides that, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. Good luck. I turned off the firewall and turned off each add on that was enabled.
And, when I run the 'diagnost connection problems' on the browser window, it comes back saying 'WIndows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection. I have waited different time frames, but each time, end up hitting the 'close' button. The online support link takes you to a page where you'll need to drill down more to get useful information. The number's By incredible coincidence, I just experienced the same browsing problem on my own computer.
And it's not a firewall, as NOD32 doesn't include one. Maybe you have an antivirus program installed that's scanning internet traffic and preventing browsing? Do you have any such program installed?
Also I was perusing articles on the Internet concerning internet issues in Vista when I came across the information that some routers aren't compatible with Vista. Are you behind a router, which would be either a wireless network or a box that splits wired broadband e.
DSL connections to multiple computers? Trying everything I can think of to help you. Thanks for the help!! Long story short - my computer came with a 6 month trail for Norton Symantec and when it expired, I removed it but apparently unsuccessfully. We had to go to symantec. After that, I am browsing away!! Thanks everyone for the ideas and support so I didn't throw this system to the wind!! So, tell me what to look at or check for.

In reply to Aashish G's post on September 2, The Vista machine connects to the Airport just fine, excellent signal strength. When I am in network settings, it shows a good connection between the computer and the Airport, but it shows the Airport is not connected to the modem. I know the Airport is working fine because I am sitting here replying to this on one of the two Macs on this network.
The internet was working for two days, and then it just stopped. In reply to Jesse and Roxy's post on September 12, One more update. I did everything recommended in this thread up, and realized the problem is not with the network. I connected directly to the modem, restarted the computer and modem, obviously no internet. So I went into control panel, and the computer says it is connected to the internet. It won't let me diagnose anything if the computer thinks there is a connection.
I don't want her to have to take it in somewhere to pay money and find out it is a simple setting that reconfigured when the computer crashed. I must say, I have a lot of respect for the people that work on and maintain windows machines everyday, these things are a pain to even figure out what is wrong, let alone fix a problem. Monday, January 7, AM. I had the same set of problems as the OP. The messages I received in the browser were along the lines of "This website cannot be displayed" and when I did the network diagnostic it said everything was fine, no problems detected.
After trying everything suggested to fix the problem, I came up with the following interesting results: 1 safe mode with networking worked 2 after repairing the system, something could not be repaired and internet browsing still didn't work 3 I performed a system restore for several weeks prior to the issue happening, and that fixed the problem 4 After testing, I decided the next thing to do would be to run all updates in Windows Update for the computer, I did so 5 After installing the updates, internet browsing no longer functioned.
So, after all of that, I find that one of the updates has to be the culprit in killing the machine's ability to browse the internet. I really hate that it is likely one of Microsoft's own updates that killed this computer's ability to browse the internet. Specs: AMD Athlon 64 x2 1. Wednesday, March 5, PM. Wednesday, March 12, AM. Same issue with HPDV laptop I would rather not do a recovery from back disks. Microsoft lets fix this problem immediately Tuesday, March 18, PM.
Same issue here on a vaio pc been happening for a while. Monday, March 24, AM. Thursday, April 3, AM. Windows Update works fine, I got the SP the other day with no problem.
So does Skype. Thursday, April 3, PM. I have the exact same problem - I run a business where I go to people's homes and fix machines that have developed issues - apparently the lady had had another tech come to her house and fix something and he had entirely messed up her ability to browse the Internet.
But oddly enough, the laptop a Sony Vaio is able to download windows updates, ping places on the internet, and run other applications that require an internet connection just fine. It was very confusing.
She didn't have system restore turned on so rolling back was not an option, I said I'd do some research on the issue before doing a complete format and reinstall of her system. Do we have an progress on this? Saturday, April 5, PM. Still no progress for me. I wish Microsoft would answer this issue. I've been on the lookout for other solutions ever since I posted my solution.
I've pretty much had the same thing happen to me with a new laptop, right out of the box. No updates can be done because even windows update can't access the internet, yet I get an assigned IP with DHCP from the router and can ping google. I've also had it that I can get to google but no one else. Other software requiring internet access or HTTP protocal can access the net. Monday, April 7, PM. Tuesday, April 8, PM. Any connection? Sunday, April 13, PM.
Sadly this is a Windows Update caused error. Its update KB Its a shame that they cause their own programs to stop working. The second link is a "resolution" they have, however they want the user to contact a third party vendor to solve the issue.
