Windows vista stalls at completing installation

Replies Did you run the Dell diagnostics on the hard drive to rule out a hardware fault? Hi, yeah i ran all diagnostics on the drive, memory, graphics etc Guess not : Oh well, at least it sounds like it's got easier options for installing them from CD or whatever versus needing a floppy. Towards the very end of the installation, the system hangs on the "Completing Installation" section. I decided to leave the computer turned on over night just in case there were things that were still loading.

This was not the case and the next morning I turned off the computer. With the new hard drive installed and with Windows Vista installed minus the "Completing Installation hanging I am faced with the same problem as before when I had the existing hard drive installed. Can anyone help me solve this issue? Ideally, I'd like to use the existing hard drive instead of the new one, simply because there is a lot of data and problems on the other drive. How could it be that I can't reinstall Vista after replacing the hard drive in my Inspiron when I have the original DVD from Dell, to be used for just that purpose?

Well, the answer was exactly what Jaco suggested. After hours of struggling with this, and about at the stage where a new computer made more sense that continuing to try to get this 6 year old one running again, changing the AHCI setting allowed the Vista installer to get over it's CRCDISK.
